Editing Due before Fri the 28th

Wes has a pretty good idea about the beginning of the piece so he’s going to take that through the match on action that leads to the shopping scene (I’ll fine cut the rough one that I’ve done). That scene transitions into Sulai’s walk through Tribeca (Wes). The walk ends with the ascent of the building (I can fine cut that). Which leaves the fall from the building or the death which ol’ Walters will do. I’ll also work with the Butcher and Bench scenes which can be voted on later.

We get the film on Friday and from there we have until Sunday night to finish…. any ideas!?

Transfer

March 20, 2008

Today the footage (16 rolls, including the two test rolls I shot with Sulai, one in color) were sent FedEx to PA, where they will receive a “Hollywood caliber” rank transfer. The total, including shipping and expedited service, comes to $345–about what we were looking to pay for a crappy job in NY. I am hoping it will fly back to us by Friday.

MORE FESTIVALS!

March 19, 2008

So, the Straight8 Festival, which appears to get the most press but is also the most expensive,  is just about to pass. I don’t think we’ll make it. The good news is that I’ve found a few more Super8/short film festivals with later dates and smaller entry costs. This one shows in Basel, accepts most anything, and is free! http://www.saeure.ch/super8/s8festival.html  This one’s in France and sounds quite established:The long established single cartridge Festival Tourné Monté (Strasbourg, France) has announced its call for entries for 2008.This year there’s major change to this perennial event in submission options – previously entrants purchased their own film and sent this to their laboratory of choice for processing with a return address of the festival organisers. In 2008, entrants can purchase Ektachrome 64T or Tr-X stock directly from the festival who will handle the whole processing chain.Completed films are due back by 30th June 2008 and credit to the organisers, each and every film is checked long before the screening – so if you’ve goofed and left the lens cap on – they’ll let you know, so you kind re-shoot. How kind! The festival will be held on the 21st and 22nd October 2008 in Strasbourg and if previous events are anything to go by audiences will be huge.To find out more, including entry details (hop on over to the official websiteor a hilariously clumsy Google-bot translation here.  Here’s a German one:

Single cartridge in Germany

We’ve been tipped off about ‘Flimmernacht ‘08′ a special single cartridge Super 8 film competition arranged by the University of Offenburg in Germany.Technically the usual applies – a single cartridge of film, shot with in camera editing, accompanied by a separate soundtrack. Completed films must be submitted by 5th May 2008 and it seems that entrants purchase their own stock and send it (along with the processing coupon) to the organisers after exposure. However, this is the genius twist – whilst film entrants just have to send in their completed film, the soundtrack is produced by totally different people – who have no contact whatsoever with the filmmakers. For the sound design element, separate applications have to be made for this second competition (a kind of competition within the competition if you will) and the combined results for each film will be shown for the first time at the festival with filmmakers having no influence on the outcome resulting in sometimes interesting, and sometimes strange results.

Films will be screened in Offenburg, which is in Baden-Württemberg near the Black Forest, on Saturday 19th July at 7pm and entry is a paltry 10 Euros – for more information see the official website where entry forms (in German) can be downloaded. And one more–this one accepts anything done in Super8 but screens other gauges:

See you on the Flipside

Running from May 21st – 31st 2008, in Plymouth, UK, The Flipside Film Festival will showcase both feature length and short films and is intended as a filmic celebration and exploration of alternate, unorthodox and under-represented views of our world. They’ve got an ongoing ‘Open Call’ for film entries of any genre or film-making style, around the following thematic areas:1/ The View From Here: Films which provide the viewer with the opportunity to literally ’see’ our world from different and unfamiliar visual perspectives, achieved by manipulating ‘the real’ with various alchemic cinematic techniques and technological trickery.2/ View Point: Films which celebrate non-mainstream / non-traditional and minority viewpoints and experiences of our world (especially political / spiritual / ideological viewpoints and experiences that are under-represented by mainstream broadcast media). A thematic celebration of the diversity of experience in our world and a challenge to the institutional shortcomings of ‘broad’ cast media. 3/ 4:3 ReView: Films which creatively embrace ‘endangered’ media practices, processes and technologies, featuring everything in the 4:3 aspect ratio, from Super 8, Standard 8 and Standard 16mm film, to analogue video. This is the thematic antidote to HDTV, where the focus is the celebration and exploration of the gloriously rarefied, rather than the aggressive product-profit driven ‘technical redundancy & replacement’ industry model. In addition to programmed film screenings there will also be the opportunity to get involved in thematically relevant film-making workshops. The festival will culminate with a keynote screening and panel discussion event in which the works of pioneering film artist Don Letts will be explored and celebrated, with insight and comment from the man himself who will be joining the festivities! For more exciting news about Flipside (including a list of contributing artists, films, special events and details of their spankin’ new website) contact Dan P. for more details at: flipside-festival@blueyonder.co.uk http://www.myspace.com/flipsidefilmfestTo enter your films, contact Dan P. at the email address above for an application pack and ntries can be accepted in the following formats:VHS / miniDV / DVcam / HDV / DVD-video (Region 2 or Region 0) / Standard 8mm / super8 / Standard 16mm / Super 16. Other media formats can be accommodated by special arrangement.*The promoters are particularly interested in receiving Super 8 originated entries for the 2008 festival and all entries in this film gauge will be screened!

March 18, 2008

First Session

March 18, 2008

Contrary to popular belief tracking down the illustrious Berkley Anne Carnine between the landfill where she oft resides and the cities of Oakland and Berkeley where she works was surprisingly easy. The days’ work will be sent to the email addresses of concerned parties forthwith.

phew

March 14, 2008

so many damn things to do. sulai, the BIFF looks cool and i’ll look into it–have you been before? presently i’m trying to get something together for the straight8 festival, which is the closest of any i’ve seen to what am interested in, but the deadline is almost here! other than that, we have to edit and score our still nameless movie! and we have to decide what to do about the transfer–neil and i are at a loss. neil left me two blank checks just in case, so let me know if you get into any trouble there sulai, or if you want to fly back and help out with some stuff.

Neil’s Mission

March 13, 2008

Co-producer Neil Blan has left for California to meet with renowned violin composer Berkley Carnine, who we hope will be creating a score for the film. An infamous recluse, Ms. Carnine purportedly resides in a hovel on a landfill and rarely responds to attempts at communication. Best of luck to Neil on his trip–let’s hope his irresistible charm holds out.

Rough Purchase…

March 12, 2008

I’ve been putting time in on this. The pacing isn’t quite right but I feel like I’m working it out.
Oh yeah and is everybody ready to throw some money at this? We should send the footage cross country soon if so.

moderation?

March 11, 2008

i’m confused, is that a post? how does it say moderation? could someone explain this to me?

Wowzers

March 11, 2008

Those Straight8 films were awesome.  I image what would help lead to success would be to plan really well rehearse all the scenes and camera angels and shoot a test roll, writing down all the exposures.  Man, that surrealist brothel was quite striking, the setting and the eels–so good.  The shoe one was really cool too-the in camera editing tricks–reminded me a bit of that creepy baby fetuses out of the apple thing you had going on in your movie with Wendy, Wes.  So guys, fly to India and we’ll knock this baby out…No, but seriously you guys should do it, just find cool settings, and it seems that they’re pretty open with as many fantasy dreamy sequences you want to create, it looks like a lot of fun.  Next year let’s also do it.  Neil, I have no idea why the image cropped, but did you see the full image? Its so gone with the wind/a streetcar named desire.
